Sergeant Air Gunner Keith Pratt Gemmel was born on August 6, 1924 at Markdale, Ontario and died on July 3, 1943, at the age of 19. He was in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was with the #19 Operational Training Unit on active duty when his Whitley aircraft #AL877 crashed during a training flight, seven miles south west of Solwinnie, Scotland.

Sergeant Air Gunner Gemmel is buried in the Kinloss Abbey Burial Ground, at Morayshire, Scotland. He and his father are pictured in the MARKDALE: CROSSROADS OF GREY book. His parents were Kenneth Shaw Gemmel and Margaret Olive Gemmel. He was in highschool at Markdale until 1940, and had some experience on a steamship as a steward in 1941, as well as some experience that year as a Wireman. He was also a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the Grey & Simcoe Foresters reserve when he enlisted in 1942. He received his Air Gunner’s badge on April 26, 1943.

His service number was R/180825.

Le sergent mitrailleur Keith Pratt Gemmel est né le 6 août 1924 à Markdale, en Ontario, et est décédé le 3 juillet 1943, à l’âge de 19 ans. Il était membre de l’Aviation royale du Canada et faisait partie de l’unité d’entraînement opérationnel no 19 en service actif lorsque son avion Whitley no AL877 s’est écrasé lors d’un vol d’entraînement, à sept milles au sud-ouest de Solwinnie, en Écosse.

Le sergent mitrailleur de l’air Gemmel est enterré dans le cimetière de l’abbaye de Kinloss, dans le Morayshire, en Écosse. Lui et son père sont photographiés dans le livre MARKDALE : CROSSROADS OF GREY. Ses parents étaient Kenneth Shaw Gemmel et Margaret Olive Gemmel. Il a fréquenté l’école secondaire de Markdale jusqu’en 1940, et a acquis une certaine expérience sur un navire à vapeur en tant que steward en 1941, ainsi qu’une certaine expérience cette année-là en tant que câbleur. Il était également soldat dans le 2e bataillon de la réserve des Grey & Simcoe Foresters lorsqu’il s’est engagé en 1942. Il a reçu son insigne d’artilleur le 26 avril 1943.

Son numéro de matricule était R/180825.

Narrative:

Nearing Wuppertal, the Halifax was attacked by ‘Fw 190’s’ at around 01:00 hrs. Losing height fast, they were soon forced to make a crash landing in pasture fields near Indoornik. The Halifax was claimed shot down by night fighter pilot Hauptmann Walter Milius of the Stab III./NJG 3 (detached to 2./NJG 1), flying a Bf 110 from Gilze-Rijen airfield.

Près de Wuppertal, le Halifax a été attaqué par des Fw 190 vers 01:00 hrs. Perdant rapidement de l’altitude, ils ont été contraints de se poser en catastrophe dans des pâturages près d’Indoornik. Le Halifax a été déclaré abattu par le pilote de chasse de nuit Hauptmann Walter Milius du Stab III./NJG 3 (détaché au 2./NJG 1), aux commandes d’un Bf 110 depuis l’aérodrome de Gilze-Rijen.
