In May 2020, George Stewart was interviewed by Waterloo Warbirds. In 2011, I had visited George Stewart at his home in Hamilton. George (he wanted me to call him George) and I had spent a whole afternoon talking about 23 Squadron.

Viewing all seven interviews on YouTube, I found out there was so much more to learn about George’s fascinating life flying the Mosquito.

About me (written in 2010)

A school teacher with a background in history, I was born in Montreal in the late 40s. Passionate about genealogy in my spare time, I have another blog dedicated to genealogy. This passion led me to create a blog on the wartime memories of my family members. I learned during my genealogical research that my father’s cousin Adrien Tremblay had died on December 17, 1944 in Holland. Adrien was a member of les Fusiliers Mont-Royal.

Two of my wife’s uncles went to Europe. One was wounded on the beaches of Normandy and the other was one a sailor on HMCS Athabaskan that sank on April 29, 1944.

My wife’s uncle who was 81 in 2009 didn’t want to talk about what had happened like so many veterans. So I got curious and I decided to write about it.

Then, as days and weeks went by, people entrusted me with the wartime memories of their loved ones so that I could write more about it.

I write to remember…

On this blog about RAF 23 Squadron, we won’t glorify war, we will read about the men who served their country. Few veterans want to talk about it. I do it for them just like some people do on sites I add a link to.

So, for all those unknown heroes who fell one by one in the field of honour, and for those who survived the battles to fall one by one into oblivion… I dedicate these pages.

They will remain only a vague memory when they die, or… they will be the strangers we honour on Remembrance Day when, to clear their conscience, those who send our soldiers to the battlefields will lay wreaths on the grave of the unknown soldier.

The more I remember, the more I want to remember…
